DESCRIPTION

Peretz Markish was born on November 25, 1895, in Polonne, modern western Ukraine, and went on to become one of the most well-known and widely translated Yiddish writers of Eastern Europe. Peretz Markish's personal archive was donated to the Blavatnik Archive in 2015 by Peretz Markish's son, David Markish, an award-winning Russian author who resides in Israeli. The collection is comprised of a variety of holdings, including: 

  • Documents related to Markish's arrest and rehabilitation and his family's exile; invitations and brochures for events commemorating Markish's life and work; Markish's handwritten notebook (Russian, unpublished); newspaper articles and magazine cutouts about Markish; drawings and posters; letters and postcards 
  • Photographs: portraits; group photographs with fellow writers and poets; group photographs with members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee 
  • Books: first prints and others 
  • Objects: Markish's cigarette case, handkerchief, tie, siddur, tefillin
