Mark Isaakovich Yankelevich was born on February 15, 1924, in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 1941 Yankelevich was drafted into the army and sent to a machine gun and mortar school. First as a gunner, then as commander of a 45mm anti-tank gun unit, he took part in the defense of Stalingrad and the Battle of Kursk. The 45mm guns were always placed in front of the infantry and attacked enemy tanks head-on. In 1943 Yankelevich was seriously wounded near Kharkiv. He was awarded the medal "For Courage." After demobilization, he graduated from the Kyiv Institute of Light Industry and for 43 years worked as a foreman at a textile plant. In 1991, Yankelevich emigrated to the US. The interview was recorded in Los Angeles on March 16, 2009.
