Samson Isaakovich Koltunov was born on March 31, 1923, in Zaporizhia, Ukraine. In 1940 he graduated from high school and enrolled in the Moscow Medical Institute. A few days after the war began, he was drafted and sent to the Leningrad Military Medical Academy. Four months later, he was sent to Stalingrad, where he served as a doctor of the 688th Airfield Maintenance Battalion until the end of the Battle of Stalingrad. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star. After the war, Koltunov worked in Lviv as chief physician of an orthopedics and trauma clinic. The interview was recorded in Los Angeles on March 9, 2009.
