Nyusya Aronovna Geikhman, née Rozenberg, was born on June 1, 1937, in the village of Yanche-Rudnya, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine. Her father left for the front in the first days after Germany’s attack and was killed in combat in 1945. Nuysya’s mother evacuated with her three children but was killed in a bombardment during the harrowing journey. The siblings were placed in different orphanages and adopted by different families. Nyusya’s life with her new family was unbearable, and she left at seventeen, enrolled in a library trade school, and later graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Culture. In 1994 Nyusya emigrated to the US with her husband and son. The interview was recorded in Los Angeles in 2009.
