DESCRIPTION

The holdings consist of 55 leaflets published between December 1941 and December 1944. These are double-sided spreads, ranging from 9.5 x 8.375 to 18.5 x 11.75 inches. A propaganda leaflet targeted at German soldiers, “Front-Illustrierte” was designed and illustrated by Alexander Zhitomirsky, one of the founding Soviet artists of the political photomontage genre. Millions of these leaflets urging surrender and promising leniency were dropped from Soviet planes over Nazi-occupied territory. German soldiers in possession of them were threatened by their fellow Germans with execution for treason.
